instructional planning skills
The first artifact contains the word ladders worksheet that was utilized to teach my individual peer strategy lesson to my Literacy in the Content Areas class. This was completed in the fall of my junior year at The College of Idaho in Dr. Yates and Dr. Copple’s class. The second artifact is the syllabus from the classroom management unit I team taught on the week of April 15th through the 19th , 2013. This assignment was for my Curriculum & Instruction class my senior year at The College of Idaho taught by Dr. Moore.
I choose the word ladders artifact because to be able to teach this strategy to my class, I had to put in many hours preparing the worksheet, planning how I would teach the lesson, and use my knowledge of mathematics to design a word ladder worksheet that would be reasonable for a high school algebra class. I choose the classroom management unit syllabus as an artifact because when I taught the lesson on classroom rules and procedures and how it related to classroom management, planning was a huge component of building the lesson. First, what material we wanted to teach has to be considered and discussed. Then the content and procedural unit objectives had to be created to ensure the information we wanted to students to learn was taught during the week. After deciding on the unit objectives, daily objectives were created to decide was learners will be able to do and know. Finally, the strategies to teach and deepen new knowledge had to be implemented to certify that students would accomplish the goals we had for the unit while taking into account their background knowledge. In the end, extensive planning went into our unit on classroom rules and procedures. Therefore, I placed these artifacts in standard 7, Instructional Planning Skills, because they demonstrate how the teacher plans and prepares instruction based on knowledge of subject matter, students, the community, and curriculum goals.
From this experience, I learned that planning for my instruction provided for an amazing learning opportunity for students, as everything we did was deliberate and well thought out. I believe this maximized learning potential as each activity and discussion provided for a content or procedural goal we wanted to accomplish. As an educator, being mindful in everything I do and having the ability to plan with the unit goals in mind, will be a key aspect to the effectiveness of my teaching.
