Adapting instruction for individual needs
The first artifact is a response paper on John Dewey’s work, Education & Experience written for Dr. Burwell’s Foundations of Schooling class during the spring term of my sophomore year at The College of Idaho. The second artifact contains the table of contents from a famous numbers text set I created in the fall of my junior year at The College of Idaho for the class, Literacy in the Content Areas, with Dr. Yates and Dr. Copple. The last artifact includes a lesson plan in which I included accommodations for students with learning disabilities that I wrote for the class, Exceptional Children, in the fall of my senior year at The College of Idaho.
I chose these artifacts because my response paper displays my personal inquiry on teaching methods according to Dewey that provides a foundation to change instructional techniques for various students. Additionally, I selected the table of contents to represent the text set that was created for students to utilize who would either like to have supplementary material. As well as, the text set can be used as interesting, additional exercises for students who are having difficulty with the abstract concepts of some famous numbers. I choose the last artifact to represent how I plan for accommodations for students with learning disabilities. Therefore, I placed these artifacts in standard 3, Adapting Instruction for Individual Needs, because they demonstrate how the teacher understands how students differ in their approaches to learning and creates instructional opportunities that are adapted to learners with special needs.
When reflecting on my paper in response to John Dewey’s work, Experience & Education, I realized how Dewey’s beliefs are a great initial groundwork for a starting point of instruction. I would incorporate his ideas of experiential learning into my teaching style as I key concept of such teaching is to vary the curriculum based on the students and how they respond to the subject matter. The text set I created is a concrete example of an instruction activity that varies the regular material used. Students would be able to use the famous numbers text set as supplemental material. I believe it is important to provide students with opportunities, such as a text set, that can enhance their experience of a topic or assist with a reinforcement of concepts. A teacher can at least offer the materials so the students have a potential of utilizing them. In addition, teachers need to prepare accommodations for learners with special need. In doing so, teachers can plan a lesson with the mindfulness of universal design in which all learners are able to be assisted no matter what their needs or learning style may be.
